Call it quits
In this age when everyone has a smartphone, it can be hard to know if your friends are truly listening to what you say. It is difficult for the average human face to compete with a touchscreen, multi-channel, GPS enabled communications device. Comedienne Shappi Khorsandi sums this up in her sketch about her iPhone addicted ex-husband who tries to 'scroll down' her face while they're in bed.
Similarly, Beyoncé and Lady Gaga find it hard to 'be in the moment' when they are plagued by telephone calls:
'Boy, the way you blowin' up my phone
Won't make me leave no faster.
Put my coat no faster,
Leave my girls no faster.
I shoulda left my phone at home,
'Cause this is a disaster!'

Happily, designer Ingrid Zweifel has created the 'phonekerchief' to deal with this dilemma:

She has lots of other ideas about how to show your friends that they have your undivided attention and encourage them to do the same for you.
Turning your phone off for someone is now the ultimate compliment. Especially when:
- As of December 2010, nearly a third (31%) of all mobile consumers in the United States owned smartphones, according to Nielsen
- Arianna Huffington recently refused to turn off her Blackberry during a flight
- In January a man was held in a cell for refusing to turn his phone off in court
Let me know what you think.
